Jacqui Queen Website promotion is a complicated subject, it is further confused by a number of fundamentally flawed, almost mythical misconceptions, that still continue to be over-emphasised by practitioners of SEO and other website marketing professionals. The first, and major myth, is that Google is God. So many website owners dismiss all other search providers as insignificant, this is a drastic oversight. Although Google does maintain by far the largest market share of all daily word searches, it does not have a complete monopoly as many people presume. Google makes up approximately 65% of daily searches, meaning 35% of your prospective visitors, are using other search engines, primarily Yahoo and MSN. By presuming that you only need to promote your website in the eyes of Google, you are missing out on a very large slice of the daily word search pie. The second myth is in some ways related to the first. Right now, I want to speak about Google PageRank. Web masters and search engine optimisation professionals alike, seem to display an unhealthy obsession with PageRank. Although a higher PageRank does lend your site weight in Google search results, it is far from being the only ting of importance. This is clearly demonstrated by the number of low ranked websites that are returned in a search engine ranking position above sites with a much higher rank. PageRank is ONLY an indication of how many other pages on the internet link to the site in question, it has absolutely nothing to do with the content of the site in any way. A well written site, containing search engine optimised content, has a great chance of being returned higher in the search results than a badly optimised site with a high PageRank. A third myth, and one that is particularly nasty to fall foul of, is the misconception that outbound links do not affect your site adversely. Yes it is true, that having many outbound links will not affect your Google PageRank, but we have already discussed the fact that PageRank is far less important than people deem it to be. There is a much more powerful status that a website can attain, far better than any level of PageRank, and that is to be recognised as an “authority” site. This kind of site is recognised within the search engines, as being referenced by other sites, most government and educational sites (.edu and .gov) have authority status, they seldom have outbound links. By keeping the number of outbound links you have upon your own site down to a small number, you have a much higher chance of attaining this valuable authority status. There are many more myths and legends that surround website promotion and search engine optimisation. It is best to approach any promotional campaign with an open mind, dismiss the rumours you may have read on public forums and other such sites, they are seldom populated by experts, would you allow an amateur financial advisor to plan your financial future for you? No, you would not, so why trust amateur web developers to know what is best for your site?
